Vacation Details

Friday, July 23
Anchorage, Alaska

Our Alaska vacation begins as we board our flight in Minneapolis for Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage. Upon arrival we’ll have a short orientation tour before checking into our hotel.

Saturday, July 24
Valdez, Alaska
We depart Anchorage this morning for Valdez, known because of its lush greenery and cascading waterfalls as the “Little Switzerland of Alaska.” Traveling north today our first stop will be to view the Spirit Houses at Eklutna. We continue through the fertile Matanuska Valley farm country with a stop at the Palmer Visitor Center to view some beautiful flowers and the large vegetables. As we travel eastward we will view the vast wilderness of this “Great Land.” We’ll stop in Glennallen for an included lunch stop and some shopping time. Then it’s southward with a stop at the Worthington Glacier, where you will have the opportunity to walk up to this hanging glacier. Then our motor coach climbs up Thompson Pass as we continue on to Valdez. This afternoon is at leisure to explore Valdez on your own, take in the museum, or go down to the docks when the boats arrive with their catch of the day.

Sunday, July 25
Valdez, Alaska

A full day of adventure begins as we board our charter boat where they take time to “show you all of Prince William Sound.” We cruise to the Columbia and Meares glaciers, both tidewater caving glaciers. The amazing wildlife possibilities are limitless: whales, sea lions, puffins, seals, sea otters, eagles, bears and more! The cruise is narrated, so we’ll hear stories about the history of the area, plus we’ll have lunch on board. We return to our hotel early this evening.
Breakfast and lunch are included.

Monday, July 26
Fairbanks, Alaska

The scenic Richardson Highway takes us to Fairbanks. We stop at the 1900’s historical Rika’s Roadhouse in Big Delta State Park and also have a spectacular view of the pipeline suspended across the Tanana River. We’ll enjoy many other viewings of the pipeline as it meanders up mountains, under rivers and parallel to the highway. We stop at North Pole so you can mail your postcards before arriving at our hotel.
Breakfast is included.

Tuesday, July 27
Fairbanks, Alaska

Our day begins with a wonderful cruise on the Riverboat Discovery on the Chena and Tanana Rivers. We’ll experience Alaskan Native cultural traditions, take a guided walking tour of the Chena Indian Village and view a bush pilot demonstration. This afternoon we’ll visit Gold Dredge #8 for lunch followed by a walking tour. Our day concludes with a guided city tour of Fairbanks. Sights include the original town site, a close-up viewing of the Trans Alaska Pipeline, the University of Alaska Farm and Gardens and the University of Alaska Museum.
Breakfast and lunch are included.

Wednesday, July 28
Fairbanks, Alaska

An exciting day begins with a morning flight to Barrow, America’s most northern city. We are greeted by Eskimos performing their native songs and dances and showing their crafts. Local guides tell us about life in Barrow while showing us the city, the surrounding area and some of their landmarks. Enjoy lunch on your own at Pepe’s, the most northern Mexican Restaurant in America. You’ll even have the opportunity to touch the Artic Ocean before our late afternoon flight back to Fairbanks.
Breakfast is included.

Thursday, July 29
Denali, Alaska

This morning we board the Alaska Railroad Denali Star for a “once in a lifetime” ride through Alaska’s interior. On our route, sparkling salmon streams and stands of birch and spruce come into view, while carpets of fireweed add dramatic purple to the landscape. Keep a keen outlook because wildlife sightings are always a possibility. We arrive at Denali in the early afternoon and check into our hotel. This evening we’ll enjoy an outstanding Cabin Night all you can eat sit down dinner followed by hilarious entertainment in Denali Park.
Breakfast and dinner are included.

Friday, July 30
Denali, Alaska

Early this morning we will be on our way for the Tundra Wildlife Tour in Denali National Park. Be sure to bring your camera and plenty of film for the photo opportunities that may lie ahead. In addition to the magnificent scenery, we’ll be on the lookout for Alaska’s big five: moose, grizzly bear, Dall sheep, caribou and wolf. And if we’re lucky all 20,320 feet of Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America, will be “out!” After enjoying an included box lunch, we return to our hotel late this afternoon.
Lunch is included.

Saturday, July 31
Anchorage, Alaska

We depart for Anchorage this morning and our first stop will be the Veterans War Memorial. You’ll have time for lunch on your own at a special restaurant on the Parks Highway in Willow, Alaska. We continue to the Iditarod Racing Headquarters in Wasilla where we’ll learn about the history of Dog Sled Racing in Alaska. We continue to Anchorage and this evening we’ll enjoy a Farewell Dinner at the Sourdough Mining Company.
Dinner is included.

Sunday, August 1
Home

Early this morning we depart for the airport and our return flight home. We have many memories of our Alaska Adventure vacation, having been transformed from Cheechacos (tenderfoots) to Sourdoughs (experienced visitor Alaskans). We return to Minneapolis early this evening.
