Rome
Today is the highlight of our Pilgrimage.
At the Papal Mass, Archbishop John C. Nienstedt will be bestowed
with the Pallium, a stole woven from the wool of two lambs that
have been blessed by the Holy Father. Previously, Pope Benedict
XVI blessed the Palliums before placing them in a 350-year-old
silver chest overnight under the main altar at St. Peter’s
Basilica. Today is the only time the archbishops will wear the
Palliums jointly. Once bestowed, liturgical rules require that
the Pallium be worn only in the metropolitans own see and then
only during solemn liturgies like ordinations. This afternoon we
will greet Archbishop Nienstedt at a reception hosted at the
Pontifical North American College. Following the reception the
rest of the day is at leisure.
